Double & Companion Urns

Companion urns, also known as double urns, are designed to hold the ashes of two individuals. They are a popular choice for families who wish to keep loved ones together in their final resting place. With a variety of materials to choose from, such as wood, brass, stone, and biodegradable materials, you can find a companion urn that best honors the bond shared between the individuals.

When selecting a companion urn, consider the combined weight of the individuals to determine the appropriate size. A good rule of thumb is to have one cubic inch of volume in the urn for each pound of weight before cremation. Double urns usually have a volume of 380-440 cubic inches, but larger sizes are also available.  If choosing a companion urn with separate compartments, it's important to ensure that each compartment is adequately sized for each individual's remains.

Single or Dual Compartments in Companion Urns

When choosing a companion urn, you have the option between urns with single or dual compartments. It is up to personal preference and individual circumstances which option is selected. If desired, even urns with a single chamber can be used to store the ashes of two individuals by placing each set of remains in separate bags.

Other Considerations for Double Urns

If placing the urn in a columbarium, consider the size of the niche when choosing a companion urn, as typical niches may not be large enough for large urns.  Inquire if the cemetery has a niche large enough to accommodate a companion urn.

If you plan to bury a double urn, it is important to note that some cemeteries may require the use of a burial vault, a reinforced container designed to withstand the pressure of being underground. To ensure a proper fit, it is important to verify that the inner dimensions of the vault are large enough to accommodate the size of the urn.
